OVAL

PATRICK O'DONNELL

10PM $8

Berliner Markus Popp, aka OVAL, is a digital mastermind extending the concept & musical platform of last year's "Ovalprocess" to a new spectrum with his new effort "Ovalcommers" in every way. Exploring a spectrum of sounds from the abrasive sandblast of neo desktop rock to the alienating, timeless splendor of DSP (digital signal processed) chamber music.. with a few signature pop inflected wall 'o' sound tunes thrown in for good measure. Popp describes this album as a 3D musical obstacle course, a friendly & accesible invitation to complexity with some surprising poetic & playful elements, an understated sophistication & an almost absentmindedly casual atmosphere. While originating as more of a by product of theory and theoretical demonstration, OVAL's music is a rich textural and often melodic soundtrack created out of cold electronic tones. In commenting on digital technology, OVAL uses digital programs as well as physical manipulations of disc to expose the process and the equipment. Having several installations in Germany and London at places like the Art Cologne and Sound works 3, OVAL are sponsored by the Goethe Institute who have helped fund many of these installations.

GUTBUCKET

8PM $7

Gutbucket is a dirty, juke-joint punk-jazz kerzoom! that has been making its mark with some of New York's most exciting performances. Gutbucket's tunes continually challenge - with frequent rhythmic shifts, evolving grooves, funky time sigs, and pushy melodies that still leave room for the group to feature its exciting improvisations. Plus stage antics and audience participation more out of the Big Apple Circus than the Blue Note. Squonk, rat-a-tat, chuck-a-luck, BANG!

ULU

LAUGHING COLORS

10PM $7

Electric, eclectic and occasionally experimental, these New York City groovists have been fine-tuning their unique approach to rump-shaking grooves for the past three years. ULU has shared the stage with such musical heavyweights as: John Scofield, The Mickey Hart Band, De La Soul, The Jazz Mandolin Project, The Greyboy All-Stars and Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers. ULU was the only instrumental band to appear at Woodstock 99.'

LAUGHING COLORS has been steadily building a loyal fan base in its native Maryland and now has reached out far beyond its borders. Their brand of infectious pop and groove are sure to grab you almost immediately if not their incredible stage presence does not catch you first!

THE CYNICS

THE UBANGIS

JOHN SINCLAIR

10PM $8

Formed in 1985 by Get Hip Recordings owner Gregg Kostelich, THE CYNICS are a Garage-Punk institution. After 5 studio albums, 2 live albums, 20+ singles and several great compilation tracks, the band is still full of power and creativeness. In their first show in DC in years, they will launch their brand new songs (to be recorded for an upcoming album in Fall 2001) along with classics from their acclaimed albums (Blue Train Station, 12 Flights Up, Rock'n'Roll and Get Our Way).

Horror-ific scenesters THE UBANGIS have been at it for years. The seminal trash palace kings and queen liven up (deaden?) the stage with their devil's brew of punk, psychobilly and surfbilly.

As a special treat, JOHN SINCLAIR (ex-Chairman of the White Panther Party, Poet, acclaimed blues journalist and DJ and, of course, ex-manager of the MC5) opens the show with special guest Steve Lewis of Signal 66 and THE ORANJ fame.

ETHERNET

SIGNS POINT TO YES

8PM $7

Cleveland melodic rock trio ETHER NET may derive its name from a computer system, but their brand of pop is extremely organic.

SIGNS POINT TO YES execute Zappa-esque structures with standard rock n' roll. The moment that you think they are playing your run o' the mill song, they deconstruct into a sonic and lyrical spiral - only to redeem themselves at the altar of Pop.

555

HELICOPTER HELICOPTER

BETTY WHITETRASH

10PM $7

Local rockers 555 have been at it for years in the area. From their crzed onstage antics to their highly combustible chops, these guys have forged a name for themselves across all types of rock genres from hard rock to metal to prog rock.

Formed in Boston in 1998, HELICOPTER HELICOPTER continues the fine tradition of Beantown's electric pop. Furthering the legacy of such male/female combos as the Pixies, Rolling Stone once hailed the duo as "male-females that work." Comparisons to the Breeders and the Flaming Lips abound although the sing-along harmonies of this act are more reminiscent of 60s pop and less grungy than their heritage.

Philly's rambunctious BETTY WHITETRASH make a return engagement to terrorize the warn-up slot.

Mon 23

Champaign, Illinois' WOLFIE deliver on their influences of the Zombies and super pop underground acts like the Superfriendz. Philadelphia's THE RED KING whose equally infectious sounds have thrilled Metro audiences time and time again offer a special brand of pop and an equally energetic live show sure to please.
