Reminiscent of Sarah MacLachlan and Tori Amos, this piano-based, R&B tinged has a somewhat more funky flair. Virginia's MEGHAN HAYES -probably the only landscaper/songwriter on the East Coast-weaves a pastiche of folk and roots that has captivated the Metro's audiences.

Mon 6	An Evening with CITIZEN COPE 10pm - $7.00	This is the first of two special resident appearances this month. The band and the man CITIZEN COPE (Clarence Greenwood) are a special blend of blues, hiphop,country, soul, and funk. Born in Memphis, the multi-talented Greenwood is a keyboardist, guitarist, DJ, singer, songwriter and producer who has remained true to himself and his music. Whether they bring the place to a complete hush or knocks you off your feet with a tremendous roar they (he), are amazing. Truly one of the greatest talents to ever grace the Washington, D.C. area.
Tue 7	HEINEKEN presents MP3.COM's 'live' tour featuring: 51 PEG combinationLOCK MACHINERY HALL 10pm - $7.00	51 PEG has made major labels turn cartwheels with their brand of industrial goth and electronica.. Most notably the MD/VA act has crossed lines with both the mainstream and the underground. combinationLOCK's music is precise but hard, stinging but sweet reminiscent of good ol' progressive rock with an updated flair. Boston's new alterno-smash MACHINERY HALL has been lauded by both critics and fans for their taut, edgy performance. This power trio melds great pop hooks with a no-nonsense approach to melody.
Wed 8	FRUIT Frank Yamma 8pm - $15.00	Formed in Adelaide, Australia in 1995, FRUIT meshes together pop/jazz/blues/roots/folk into a beautiful and rhythmic experience. Their exquisite harmonies and uplifting tunes are sure to please all within earshot. Their appearance on over 200 festivals and international events have yielded them a sweetheart spot on such major world gatherings as WOMAD and the Edinburgh Festival. Brilliant aboriginal artist FRANK YAMMA supports an evening of wonderful talent. This production is co-presented with kind help of the Embassy of Australia.

Fri 10	ELIO SCHIAVO 8pm $8.00/Advance $10.00/Day of Show	After spending more than a decade in the San Francisco bay area cultivating his skills, singer/songwriter ELIO SCHIAVO recently made his way to New Orleans, where he has been steadfastly earning a solid reputation in blues circles. Featuring a vocal style heavily rooted in R&B, soul and funk, Schiavo creates music that fits in quite well as a new representative of the Crescent City.

Sat 11	DMS 8pm - $7.00	Midwesterners Steve Lamos and Ben Wilson are DMS. Think gadgets, programming and jazz feel. Using Miles Davis as a compass, Sly Stone as a Northern Star and indie rock as the forest, and you have DMS. The former rhythm section of The Firebird Band has a constant touring schedule that has helped to solidify their post-rock futuristic sound. In addition to their work in The Firebird Band, both Lamos and Wilson have worked with many of the midwest's finest post-rockers.

Sun 12	WOMEN N ROCK a benefit featuring: ESMIRELDA JILL SOBULE COMMONBOUND VAPOR 8pm - $12.00	Heart disease is the number one killer of women in America. In an effort to support research and education, WOMEN N ROCK enlists the aid of some of the best female artists to fight this deadly disease. From the witty and moving songcraft of JILL SOBULE to the excellent live shows of COMMONBOND and VAPOR to the often-raw ESMIRELDA, this event will surely be memorable and heartfelt as well as fun. Tue 14	THE RED KING CROPDUSTER K-FLOOR 10pm - $7.00	Philadelphia's THE RED KING whose infectious sounds have thrilled Metro audiences time and time again offer a special brand of pop and an equally energetic live show sure to please. Despite this lurking opacity that seems to shadow the band, CROPDUSTER aren't your token indie band hidden behind a wall of non-sequiturs and red herrings, incapable of conveying genuine emotion. Instead, the quartet have deeper, mentally attuned trust in instinct and intuition and a free spirit reminiscent of the Grateful Dead (minus the tediousness- check their blazing live take of the Dead's "U.S. Blues") and contemporary kindred spirits, Ween. The industry powers-that-be have certainly taken note. Also and industry fave are openers K-FLOOR whose brand of pop is aggressive yet melodic.

They combine the angst of early Smiths with the whimsy of the Merrymakers and the dramatic stylings of the Cure. This act is on fire with the "kids" and has garnered rave reviews from everyone from AP to CMJ to most respected alternative press. Opening are Philadelphia's CLOCK STRIKES 13.

Sun 19	HIS NAME IS ALIVE FLASHPAPR 10pm - $10.00	Named after history class notes on Abraham Lincoln, the Livonia, Michigan-based sonic manipulators HIS NAME IS ALIVE formed in 1990 when multi-instrumentalist/producer Warren Defever (also of shockabilly group Elvis Hitler) was still in high school. Defever, former schoolmate Karin Oliver (vocals) and drummer Damian Lang released self-produced cassettes of their music, one of which made its way to the pioneering art label 4AD in the UK. Intrigued with the band's blend of spectral vocals, poetic lyrics, and textural guitars, 4AD signed the band. In their ten- year history, Defever has taken the act from their artsy beginnings through the musical spectrum from gospel to folk to rock without losing the integrity of their mission. Friends and partners in crime of HNIA, FLASHPAPR also hail from Michigan (Ann Arbor). Started as a guitar-violin improvisational duo, the group has evolved into a lyrical wonder evoking the impressions of a working class artistic aesthetic.

Tue 21	TWANG N TRASH TOUR featuring: JAKE AMY SPEACE 8PM - $7.00	Frontwoman Jessie Lee Montague (aka "JAKE") traveled extensively through the streets and cities of Europe honing her craft as a guitarist and songwriter. Upon her return to the States in the Big Apple, she formed the extension of her vision with talented multi-instrumentalist John Annese and a brilliant drummer/percussionist Jagoda to redefine the female-fronted rock sound. AMY SPEACE kicks off the show with her city girl with cowboy boots stylings put a spin as well on female-led pop/rock.
Tue 21	LANDSPEEDER THE POOR RICH ONES KIMONE 10PM - $7.00	LANDSPEEDER featuring Now! Music and Fashion's Tim play crunchy, juicy rock and roll with indie pop sensibility. Norway's POOR RICH ONES have received both critical and public acclaim with their ethereal vocals and extraordinary melancholic pop. In 1998 the band won the Spellemannsprisen, which is the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy Awards for their second album. They have been acclaimed as one of the most exciting new acts to come out of Norway. As CMJ wrote: "William's cool falsetto makes sure you remember each song's melody, and underneath, there's plenty more to grab you…sharp electric guitar parts… and keyboard gurglings give these songs an open-ended feel." Supporting are Massachusetts act KIMONE.

Thur 23	PAUL RUDERMAN cd release party 9PM - $7.00	The strong vocal talents of PAUL RUDERMAN have propelled him and his talented band to a great level of respect in the NY area acts. The laid-back funk combined with acoustic guitar reminds you of Dave Matthews and James Taylor together with a vintage feel.

Fri 24	ROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE FAMILY BAND 8PM - $10.00	History in the making at Metro Café? Yes. The music of ROBERT RANDOLPH is beyond a man playing a pedal steel guitar on a stage. It is more than just a band, a family, on stage engulfing its audience with intense jams. It is a unique style and a new genre of music altogether. Hearing it for the first time, you get the feeling of meeting someone for the first time and knowing instantly you've met a life-long friend. His custom-made 13-string instrument takes you from gospel to blues to rock and back again. Most recently seen on the North Mississippi All-Stars tour and an integral part of Medeski's The Word project, Robert and Co. are thrilling audiences of all types and all ages. DO NOT MISS! Minimal, dreary chords settle under the twangy, thoughtful musical ground as Jason's lyrical pain and sorrow is expressed in a manner reminiscent of Will Oldham and country balladeers. Backed by an equally thought-provoking and talented band, SONGS:OHIA takes you in that place where you can sing an evening song on a front porch - but feel good about it.

After 5 studio albums, 2 live albums, 20+ singles and several great compilation tracks, the band is still full of power and creativeness.
