ENSIMI ULPA 10PM
$8 |
Iceland's indie rockers ENSIMI was formed in 1996. A year after the release of their first album in 1998, the act was voted Best Newcomer and "Atari" the Song of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards. In 1999 Steve Albini, best known for his production work with bands such as Nirvana and The Pixies, expressed his interest in working with the band. As a result Albini came to Iceland and produced half of ENSIMI'S second album "BMX" which came out in the fall of 1999 and a new album is expected in 2002. Ensimi has played with the likes of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Chumbawamba, Ian Brown and Bloodhound Gang. Other than being hard at work in the studio, they have been performing in Iceland, Scandinavia and the U.S. ULPA, also from Iceland, was founded in the year 99. The band is a merge of two other bands that were experimental music competition winners of 97. The short time that Ulpa's music has been outside their garage the response has been unbelievable.

| Tue 9 | THE
PUSH STARS ANTHENAEUM CINEMA 8 10
PM - $10.00 |
THE PUSHSTARS formed in Boston in 1995. A year later, they released their debut and immediately started a non-stop journey of winning fans the old fashioned way - by constantly touring. After rising to the top of the highly competitive Boston music scene by selling out every club in town and winning numerous prestigious Boston Music Awards, the band started a quest for a national following. With the boost of being named "The Best Unsigned Band in America" from an EMI Music Publishing/R&R magazine competition, the band was inundated by industry interest. The band's music spread quickly with its real-life, real-people echo of Bruce Springsteen and the expert pop hooks of noted bands such as Buffalo Tom and The Lemonheads. Along with their intense roadwork, the band has been a favorite of the Hollywood film and television community. Their music has been in blockbuster films and major tv shows. CMJ recently said "lively, expertly crafted composite of rock, with radio-hit potential too great to measure, The Push Stars' endless melodies are hard to shake." The Greensboro, North Carolina-based alternative rock quartet ATHENAEUM debuted in 1995 with a self-released eponymous LP, before signing to Atlantic Records. CINEMA8 is a refreshing alternative to the look-a-like boy bands and fluffy pop music that currently dominate the airwaves. Hard-hitting guitar rhythms and thunderous beats combined with expressive lyrics show that CINEMA8 is ready to take over as the dominant one in this Radio-relationship. |

HIGHDIVERS is the latest project of John O'Brien, formerly of the melodramatic popsters Tuesday Weld. Although a shifting group of friends come in to provide a host of instruments on this release, this O'Brien's project, and he sets the tone with his unique songwriting and slick vocals that seem to change to match the style of song.

[velvet],
DC/BALTIMORE's much-requested WHFS darlings return to the Metro to promote
and release their new CD of world-class emocore.
LATRISTIC, the duo of Rob Pierangeli (vocals, guitars, songwriting)and Steve Cooper (keyboards, songwriting, trinkets), is a Washington, D.C. area outfit that spends a great deal of its time dodging description. With an endless list of influences scattered across rock, experimental electronica, and hip-hop, LATRISTIC writes songs that meld thorough songwriting, intricate percussion, and a soundscape propped up by melody. |

MORRIS
10
PM - $7.00

New
York quartet THE CHURCHILLS' indelible melodies and power-packed pop channel
the spirit of Badfinger and Big Star but with a lighter accessibility.
Paul Brill has been a longtime fixture on New York City's music circuit;
his recent release, the ambitious Halve the Light, (Scarlet Shame Records)
should secure his place in the downtown scene as the folk guy with an
edge.
The best of PAUL BRILL's American roots influences, blending country twang, tongue-in-cheek pop, and home-spun bluegrass with straight-up, indie rock lyrics. Through Brill's lens the world is suburban -- one of city cafes and tragic drug escapades which all serve as backdrop for the main event, two lovers trying to work things out. |

| Mon 15 | MARK
GHOST of COCKEYED GHOST 10
PM - $7.00
|
MARK GHOST, leader of Los Angeles' COCKEYED GHOST, puts a new spin on
'70s pop with depth and wit - happy melodies undercut with sometimes poignant,
sometimes angry musings. His amazingly consistent batch of songs run the
gamut from sweet, chiming pop to in-your-face rock, with stops at naked
piano balladry and Ben Folds-ish finger-snappers. |

BROTHERS
PAST 10
PM - $7.00 |
Let's
quote from their own press release, they are "Punk-Mambo." Although
this may seem like a band trying too hard to defy description, the label
is absolutely accurate! BABALOO, to the uninitiated, sets out to infuse
Samba, Mambo, BossaNova, Juju, Cha-cha, Reggae, Ska, Calypso, Rai and
Merengue - with clever punk rock. The songs are sung in many different
languages, including: Spanish, French, Portuguese, English, Arabic, and
guaranteed Swahili." BABALOO are an ecletic dream of a band as tuneful
and as original in execution as any new music I have heard in a long time.
SIKHARA's combination of projection and unique sound system devices consantly evolve the band's direction. Always in motion, the band seamlessly infuses so many different styles it is, well, surreal. |

| Wed 17 | SUMMER
HYMNS DESTROYER 8
PM - $7.00 |
Based
in Athens, Georgia, SUMMER HYMNS have always been part of a tight-knit
community. Even so, there is something special and unique about their
self-styled evolution. Zachary Gresham's songwriting inspirations stem
from a youth in rural Georgia surrounded by gospel, folk and traditional
music. Rustic influences reveal themselves in Gresham's simple, understated
folk structures that lie beneath the HYMNS' dense psychedelic fabric.
Above all, the austere beauty of Summer Hymns stems from Gresham's heartfelt
songwriting. Gresham is quietly carving out a niche for himself as a unique
and distinctive voice. Prodded by the epic contributions of his bandmates,
he has created a gorgeous and complex pop epic.
Pop craftsmen like Daniel Bejar of DESTROYER come around only a few times each generation. His newest effort, Streethawk: A Seduction, is the most potent collection of pop songwriting in a long, long time. Drawing on influences past (Bowie, Syd Barrett, Eno, Mayo Thompson, the Smiths) and present (Pavement, the Fall, David Berman), Bejar and his four Destroyer cohorts concoct timeless pop anthems. But while the band pays a debt to classic sounds, Bejar¹s talent shines brightest in his overtly literary lyrics. His words spill out like poetry - sometimes the message is unmistakable, other times it's hidden in twisted vines of allegory. |

| Sat 20 | MOODROOM ETHERNET HEADQUARTERS 10
PM - $7.00 |
Emerging
from the Washington DC rock underground, MOODROOM has staked their claim
as one of the scene's most promising bands. The band weaves alt-rock,
pop, and trip-hop influences with beautifully evocative vocals to create
an innovative sound that is both mechanical and organic. While MOODROOM's
music has been compared by some to Belly, Garbage, No Doubt, and Portishead,
they definitely create their own unique sound.
Cleveland melodic rock trio ETHERNET may derive its name from a computer system, but their brand of pop is extremely organic. |

DO MAR SUNSET VALLEY 10
PM - $7.00
|
Sunset
Valley's debut album, The New Speed (Sugar Free) is characterized by the
same driving intelligence and sharpened rock n' roll instincts which have
made them one of the most important bands to have emerged from the Northwest
in recent years.
Propelled by the frenetic brilliance of frontman Herman Jolly, Sunset Valley's riveting sound combines the disparate elements of post punk artists like the Pixies with a maniacally gritty, countrified underpinning too far left of field to be pigeonholed. Songs such as "Red Thai Sunday", "California Now", and "Red Room Rocket Ride" exemplify the group's charged melodicism, while unabashedly quirky wordplay pervades the entire disc. This allusive lyricism finds its sources in everything from Hank Williams to molecular biology textbooks and post-Einstein-theories of relativity and time travel. Formed in September 1996 in their home base of Portland, Oregon, Sunset Valley started out as a trio (this line-up included, in addition to Jolly, Jonathan Drews on guitar and drums; Eric Furlong on bass), which has since expanded into a five piece. While it is the original configuration who perform on The New Speed, recent joinees Jeff Saltzman (keyboards) contributed as producer and mixer and Tony Lash (drums) is known for his production work (The Dandy Warhols, Elliott Smith, Eric Matthews) as well as his stint as drummer for Heatmiser. The New Speedis an exceptional debut by he group The Rocket singled out for praise by saying " Sunset Valley has made the leap from Most Promising Portland Band of 1997 to one of the great Northwest groups of 1998." |
