LO FABER BAND
10:30PM - $8.00 |
As the leader/founder/principal songwriter of acclaimed jam band God Street Wine, LO FABER made a mark as the crème de la crème of the HORDE luminaries. The talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist returns to the stage with an equally talented ensemble which includes an all-star lineup comprised of members of other such jam bands like Ominous Seapods and the Zen Tricksters. |

VELVETENE combinationLOCK LIQUID SOLID 10PM - $7.00 |
VELVETENE is a Baltimore/DC- based "alternative" rock band that blends its eclectic influences into an original, dynamic, and emotional sound. Soaring vocals, phased out blues-rooted guitar work, driving bass, and intricate percussion. VELVETENE has combined these elements to create a sound which has been considered to be too unpretentious to be labeled "emo" and too distinctive and imaginative to be called modern alternative rock. The
DC- based combinationLOCK mixes progressive flavors and alternative
punk styling into song-oriented hard rock. Resurrected from the remains
of Sorry About Your Daughter, cL drills a jagged hole through the common
notion of modern rock, from behind. Their explosive live performance
led to an invitation to play the 2001 HFStival. The band has been featured
in The Washington Post and will be heard on forty episodes of the upcoming
season of MTV's Undressed. |

| Sun 4 | TREMBLING
BLUE STARS DENISON NAD NA VILLUS 10PM - $8.00
|
Formed from the ashes of THE FIELD MICE and NORTHERN PICTURE LIBRARY,
TREMBLING BLUE STARS' Wratten forges musical hammers of electronic ballads
and washes of guitars to create a sound crafted well before Belle and
Sebastian hit the scene.
From the very beginning, from the very first grainy notes of sound through a computer speaker, it was painfully obvious that Pennsylvania's Denison Witmer or simply "DENISON" guitar picking and reedy vocals capture the essence of a young songwriter mining the potent ground of emotive indie rock and strong pop hooks, however, Witmer has chosen a different path for himself. That path is of simplicity recognizing the almost overwhelming power of simple honesty. His confessional songwriting reminds one of the folk perilous Nick Drake or the melancholic tones of the Red House Painters. Fronted
by Dan Sullivan of the Butcher Shop Quartet, A To Z Consolidated and

Houston, TX's FACEPLANT rocks hard with a tight rhythm section with two throaty lead singers and two mean, melodic guitarists. Their sound ranges from rap to rock to funk and its all straight adrenaline-fueled jam. INFECTIOUS ORGANISMS. Combining an eclectic mix of early rock, jazz and

known recording acts such as Outkast, Black Star, the Roots, Hieroglyphics,
Medeski Martin & Wood, Organized Konfusion, Cibo Matto and the 2 Skinnee
Js.

CLARE
FADER & 9PM
- $7.00
|
Based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, this Cabaret/Vaudeville-inspired group of five is busy wooing fans and winning audiences up and down the East Coast. Led by the seductive CLARE FADER, THE VAUDEVILLIANS are notoriously hard to classify. A little bit dark, a little outrageous, and truly original. They are truly Cabaret for the 21st Century.
| APEHOUSE
10PM - $7.00 |
Lounge/acid jazz/groovy cabaret style for all you lizards and apes!
| Sat 10 | THE
BEANS
10PM - $7.00 |
Seminal modsters THE BEANS return to their hometown fresh from national touring. |
|
| Sun 11 | SUN
KING DEL REY 10PM - $7.00 |
Bedazzled mogul and DC veteran Steve Willett (Tone, Strange Boutique) and friends forge a new sound in SUN KING. Meanwhile, DEL REY from Chicago spans the gap between anthemic math rock while maintaining a deep groove that is sublimely subliminal. At times, two bassists twist around each other, other times two guitars become a choir, and at others keyboards and drum machines blow cosmic smoke rings. Live, DEL REY has reached beyond the scope of their debut recording; they now incorporate two complete drum sets into much of the set. The two drummers play off one another, not behind or in front of each other, together creating a beat that would be indecipherable if one was played alone. DEL REY has also developed an aggressive edge, experimenting with multiple basses. |

| Thu 15 | HOMUNCULUS
9PM - $7.00 |
Cincinatti, OH's HOMUNCULUS melds plenty of hooks and urban influenced jam-grooves. A jazzy cross between Steely Dan and some of Incubus's mellower ballads; the band is, however, not just about pop stylings. The act has loads of tunes that could find a home in the hearts of jam and jazz lovers everywhere. The band tours regionally at clubs in Cincinnati, Athens, Columbus, Chicago and New York. The group has been together for years and they've managed to play the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and had a song of theirs featured on a VH1 show, and even won a citywide battle of the bands contest for a major label. |
|
| THE
LIARS' ACADEMY SCHATZI 10PM - $7.00 |
THE
LIARS' ACADEMY is a melodic pop/rock/post-punk outfit hailing from Baltimore
MD. The Academy formed during the fall of 2000, following the breakup
of frontman Ryan Shelkett and drummer Evan Tanner's previous band, Cross
My Heart. Shelkett and Tanner joined forces with friend Matt Smith of
Richmond-based Strike Anywhere and the trio quickly produced a batch of
inspiring, heartfelt songs that will surely impact the current state of
pop music. Their live performance clearly showcases the band's polished,
melodic, hook-laden songs that will appeal to fans of all realms of the
independent music world.
Oklahoma's SCHATZI - named for a common dog name which is German for "sweetheart,"- focuses on a combination of sounds. One hears Zep's thunderous low-end, Superchunk's smart everyman lyrics, and the Get Up Kids' energetic melodies. |

KINKAID is original alterna-pop music. Rubin Kinkaid is the sum of its
parts with bringing their influences ranging from Catherine Wheel to The

|
| Sun 18 | ULU
10PM - $7.00 |
ULU is an instrumental four-piece experimental groove band from New York. The group's sound draws heavily from Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and James Brown to create a funk-jazz groove. ULU, however, goes far beyond the standard chick-a-wah bands that share similar musical models.
| Mon 19 | ANTIGONE
RISING
9PM - $7.00 |
New York's all-female quintet ANTIGONE RISING were proclaimed by VH-1 as "one of the top ten best indie bands in the country." Cutting their teeth on numerous national performances sharing the stage with Sarah Maclachlan, the Indigo Girls and Ani Difranco, they were a staple of the Lilith Fair circuit. The pop-rock acts album has been lauded by critics, however, lead vocalist Cassidy's Bette Midler-meets-Madonna approach and the band's high energy live show put this act above the rest of most other current acts on the scene. |
|
| Tue 20 | MY
MORNING JACKET
10PM
- $7.00
|
With a voice that is both honey and charcoal atop deep Southern gothic canvasses with gracious acoustic and electric guitars, MY MORNING JACKET throws a mesmerizing soundscape replete with harpischord, harmonica and lap steel with drums awash in reverb. The weeping sound of this Louisville act is absolutely biblical and soothing while strangely haunting. PAUL BRILL first began making music at the tender age of 16, recording songs in his home studio in Vermont. After leaving the East Coast for California, he formed the much-acclaimed ENVELOPE. After that band was shelved in a major label debacle, Paul returns four years later in triumphant fashion with brilliant folk rock and pop. His songs of lost souls and late-night travelers really take you to another place we all have visited. |
