JEN
DURKIN & 10:30PM $10 |
After five years of handling the lead vocal chores of DEEP BANANA BLACKOUT along with co-writing and producing that act, JEN DURKIN breaks out with a stellar band of musicians to forge her own star. As part of the Berklee Gospel Ensemble, Jen learned to sing from the soul. She eventually landed a gig paying tribute to the best of Funk and R&B. During this time she was again immersed in the music of P-Funk with a group of musicians who were determined to continue in that tradition that they deeply respect and love. Over the years Jen has performed on stage with Fred Wesley, Michael Ray, Marshall Allen, Merl Saunders, John Scofield, Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors (she is now a Woo herself) and, of course, George Clinton and the P-Funk All-stars. Come check out who could arguably be one of the best female vocalists on the circuit.

While Washington, D.C.'s ROCKMASTER GENERAL shows their gratitude to D.C. rock pioneers Fugazi, Nation of Ulysses and Jonathan FireEater, the band nevertheless forges a new path towards something new. A diverse collection of slightly caustic, sometimes dirty pop songs dealing with issues like traitors in the CIA, eating disorders, or car-on-car romance. Also from DC, LIQUID SOLID has recently created a buzz garnering regular airplay on DC101 and a self-financed album produced and engineered by heavyweight players. QUARASHI was founded in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1996 by Solvi Blondal (songwriter, producer and drummer), Hoskuldur Olafsson (rapper and singer) and Steinar Orri Fjelsted (rapper). Often compared to the Beastie Boys, the group has made international buzz after shows with some of finest of today's artists. After releasing an EP in their founding year (which sold out in two weeks and has become a collectors item) they released their first full length self-titled album which became a massive hit and went Gold in Iceland. In the year 1998 they supported Prodigy in their concert in Reykjavik. After their second album went gold in Iceland, Icelandair set up the Airwaves concert where QUARASHI were invited to play. After that concert EMI publishing invited them to come to New York where they worked on some new songs and demos and signed a publishing deal with EMI. |

Don't let her sweet looks and petite frame deceive you, MARY PRANKSTER, leader of the Baltimore-based trio that also bears her name, lives and breathes rock & roll. Despite her cute, animated expressions conjuring up a sort of Celtic Betty Boop, this girl is loud and rowdy, and, man, does she have a foul mouth. PRANKSTER, who will neither confirm nor deny if the moniker is her actual birth name, spent several years earning a reputation for herself in the Mid-Atlantic as a solo artist. With songs like "Tits & Whiskey" "Mercyfuck," "Piss Off" and "The World Is Full of Bastards," it's no wonder that they've actually been banned from playing clubs in and around their own stomping ground!

Our monthly event benefiting the Fourth of July Hemp Coalition features a new artist at every event. This month's artist is MSAWBE featuring the music of Mark Nickens on Washington, D.C.'s own Highland Records imprint. His music is innovative, and truly ahead of its time. It speaks to the mind, body and soul in a magical, mystical way. His style is described by some as beautiful and unique. Some listeners liken it to space music or space rock. |

The last thing you'd expect to hear from Boston is a country band---let alone a country band who get it right. There's just no 'splainin the debut of CASH MONIES &THE JETSETTER which we suppose is as good a name as any seeing as The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash is already taken. Same concept though: hard-driving truck-stop country with the occasional new-grass close harmony flourish. |

Annapolis, MD act JEPETTO has been rocking the East Coast for two years. The bands unique blend of high energy Hip Hop, Metal, Funk and DC Go-Go create a live party style show that have earned them shows with Cypress Hill, Jimmies Chicken Shack, Good Charlotte, the WARPED TOUR and two years straight at the HFSTival in Washington DC. Due to popular demand, MOON BOOT LOVER has again burst onto the scene. This seminal band of the jam-groove scene was catapulted the band onto the burgeoning jam band scene with a spicy mix of funk, soul, rock and memorable songcraft. Featuring original drummer Alan Evans (Soulive), Owen Yost (bass) and the inimitable vocal stylings and crazed guitar work of Peter Prince, MOON BOOT LOVER inspired younger bands and contemporaries with their soulful groove. Burlington, VT's SHADRAQ plays hyper-freak-fusion-improvisational-jam-rock. They have most recently been showcasing and playing shows at various clubs and bars across the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions. |

LATRISTIC, the duo of Rob Pierangeli (vocals, guitars, songwriting)and Steve Cooper (keyboards, songwriting, trinkets), is a Washington, D.C. area outfit that spends a great deal of its time dodging description. With an endless list of influences scattered across rock, experimental electronica, and hip-hop, LATRISTIC writes songs that meld thorough songwriting, intricate percussion, and a soundscape propped up by melody. Who's Brit-rock, but not British; Spacey and rocking out but not a jam band? We are talking about heroes PHASER. It sounds like Blur, and it sounds like Pink Floyd, and Spiritualized and even the Verve in a way. It has the songwriting strength you'll find in a classic rock band. They're not jamming, the songs are loosely structured. They allow for tangents but not pointless guitar wanking. It's tight but not restrictively so (kinda' like a good pair of shoes. Having toured with such prominent UK bands as Gomez and Super Furry Animals, PHASER. Has established themselves well within the new Brit-pop revival here in the States. |

WATERSTREET HALF-EMPTY 10PM $7 |
Defining the music of DEXTER'S SANDBOX is like describing what you get when you throw pop, rock, alternative, blues and funk in a bowl and stir. Immediately evident is the inspiration from industry icons Dave Matthews Band, Bruce Hornsby, Sting and Jimi Hendrix. However, attentive listeners talk about threads of Stevie Wonder, Phish, Motown, bluegrass, and even Madonna. The music is well-executed, percussive, energetic, full of pop sensibility and always has a twist. Returning to the Café is WATERSTREET. Originally a GW band, the band has branched out from a college rock band to a hi-nrg rock band in their own right. Supporting are locals HALF-EMPTY. |

It is truly a rarity these days to hear a well-crafted piece within the ever-growing "jamband" scene. So many groups focus so heavily on the improvisation that often the craft of songwriting is lost in the mix. Central Pennsylvania's BROTHERS PAST avoids this with well-crafted songs involving intricate vocal harmonies, great lyrics, and passionate improvisation. The band's approach to improvisation does not necessarily fall under ordinary circumstances as the band explores everything from drum & bass, to ambient-rock, to hip-hop/groove oriented feels. Annapolis, MD's UNCLE VITO is an instrumental project that is almost all aimprovisation. Combining the best elements of high energy funk, drum & bass, and even metal, this dynamic trio comes up with what they call "tribal rock groove improv." DEVOLVER combines an eclectic mix of rock, reggae, blues, jazz, and funk creating a uniquely full-bodied sound comparable to such artists as Phish, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and The Talking Heads. Blending these influences to create original material, this five-peice jam/rock outfit has built a strong, devoted fanbase in PA and the surrounding areas. This marks their Metro Café debut. |

The Washington D.C.-based Shakedowns specialize in two kinds of loud and aggressive rock n' roll: a hard riff-driven British style of r & b like the Yardbirds or Pretty Things and a more stoopid updated version a la the Dictators. Of course most of the tunes are short and sweet and deal with chicks in one way or another, but, of course, the lyrics don't matter all that much; the throb's the thing. Formerly known as the Baby Killers, THE VON BONDIES were most recently seen here in Dc with the White Stripes. The Detroit-based group has a Sumber Party member and a new album out on Sympathy for the Record Industry. |

While attending Fordham University in Bronx, New York, a duo created SEEKING HOMER. After its inception in 1995, a full touring band emerged to tour extensively in the fall of 1997, playing shows on the East Coast from Massachusetts to Georgia. Within the last year or so, the band has shared the stage with some great bands that have helped them out. Those bands include The Samples, Left Undone, Guster, Cowboy Mouth, Stand Up Eight, Acoustic Junction, and Latex Generation. If you drive down New Jersey's Garden State Parkway and pull off at Exit 105, you'll head towards one of the Northeast's most revolutionary rock and roll strongholds - the tri-city area of Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Red Bank. It's the homeplace of gifted Jersey guys with a transcendent understanding of the American soul and the fanfares of the common man - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, the Asbury Jukes, and now, proudly bearing the torch of those legends, the Long Branch-based HIGHWAY 9. On the band's highly anticipated debut, HIGHWAY 9 conjure their own American alchemy for the new millennium. Their triumphant album gleams with brash, voluptuously beautiful songs that mystically embrace the sumptuous harmonies and melodically-rich intelligence of the Eagles, the roots-relevant cujones of the Wallflowers and Counting Crows, while embracing the flair of alt-country acts like Ryan Adams, Wilco and Son Volt. Formerly known as Samhill, the band has supported acts like Creed, Fuel, Matchbox 20, Everclear, Matthew Sweet, Southside Johnny, the Asbury Jukes, and more. Area act SYCAMORE GROVE opens the show with their post-grunge sound falling somewhere between the softer side of MB20 and the chaotic side of The Wallflowers. |
