Los Angeles band PHANTOM PLANETformed in Los Angeles in 1994; all five members were in high school at the time. Their music reflects the influence of classic pop and rock bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Who, Queen and ELO (among their more contemporary faves are Ben Folds Five, Radiohead, Superdrag and The Cardigans).

PHANTOM PLANET, the name comes from a cheesy 60s
sci-fi flick, quickly began selling out local venues like The Whisky and The Roxy as word of mouth circulated from high school to high school throughout L.A. The band will be featured in January on Letterman and several other high profile showcases.

WEEKEND EXCURSION

10PM $7

Formed in high school in 1995, this Raleigh-based band began working tobacco road turf back in the late-nineties, when the band members attended Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Today, WEEKEND EXCURSION seems poised to be the next big thing out of the mid-Atlantic. The bands music, like its stage show, is energetic and infectious. Catchy hooks and strong melodies combine with dynamic vocals and lush harmonies.

During the four years the members attended college, they managed to release three CDs, established the band as a corporation, and hired a manager and booking agent to oversee the details. Challenging years of juggling college classes with weekend road trips produced a large fan base throughout North Carolina, allowing the band to eventually sell-out prestigious venues such as Ziggy's in Winston-Salem and Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill.

In the year that followed, the band wasted no time growing its touring radius from Florida to Washington D.C. High profile shows with Evan and Jaron, Melissa Etheridge and Sister Hazel helped heighten the bands profile within its home state.

However, the concert stage wasn't the only platform the band used to gain exposure. The band had four songs included in episodes of the 10th season of MTV's Real World, and had two songs featured on the Warner Brothers television show Dawson's Creek.

Thu 17

ROOSEVELT ROOSEVELT

COUNT THE STARS

JUPITER SUNRISE

10PM $7

After having been playing together for years and both attending Hamilton College, guitarist Aaron Tarr and Charles Gray had gone to high school together in Arlington, VA and had been playing together for a few years. In 1998, they met bassist Ben Pastor here at school, and then convinced drummer Chris MacPherson to leave the current band he was in to join them...and so they started playing all around the area, under the name Almost Dry. The band renamed themselves ROOSEVELT ROOSEVELT shortly thereafter and continue to play alternative pop to clubs in the
Mid-Atlantic.

Albany, NY'S COUNT THE STARS are really making a name for themselves on the circuit. Having played shows with Stroke 9, Goldfinger, They Might Be Giants, Unified Theory (ex-members of Blind Melon and Pearl Jam), Nine Days, Sponge, Rob Base and many more, this hard-edged pop quartet have a crisp and clean sound without losing their rock edge.

Opening is solo rocker JUPITER SUNRISE.

Sat 19

JUNIPER LANE

THE WORRY STONES

10PM $7

Most recently seen in the area with Virginia Coalition at the 9:30 Club, JUNIPER LANE is a four-piece modern rock band from Washington DC. Their music is characterized by soaring female vocals over rich musical textures. With the powerful voice of Vivion Smith at the forefront, JUNIPER LANE offers an emotional and melodic take that suggests a mid-Atlantic cousin to the Cranberries, or maybe an East Coast rival to No Doubt, sans ska inflections. When Smith takes to the piano for a quiet number such as "Grey" or the classically dynamic "Scraps of Paper," there's an eerie echo of Tori Amos, albeit less obtuse.

The other band on that same bill was THE WORRY STONES also from NoVa and also a great melodic pop band!
