THE WALKMEN

MAZARIN

OH MY GOD

10PM $8

Rising from the ashes of Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Recoys, NYC's THE WALKMEN reminds one of early Brian Eno, the more idyllic moments of The Pixies, and the crossing point where Joy Division became New Order. These former DC men play a loose and creative mix of piano, guitar, and organ that's as exciting as it is surprising. The band plays with a bracing maturity and an impressive command of tone, seamlessly setting a consistent mood.

Usually, everybody's ready to pounce when a drummer comes from behind the kit and takes the reins as lead singer/guitarist. Quite often, result is, well, terrible. But Quentin Stoltzfus nearly blew everyone away when emerged from behind the kit of Azusa Plane to create MAZARIN. Displaying a remarkably developed psych-pop sensibility, MAZARIN has catapulted the 27-year-old Philadelphia songwriter up near the top tier of indie artists. Augmenting his fluid, repetitive, New Zealand-type strumming with electric squalls and earnest, confident vocals, Stoltzfus sounds like he's having fun, and it's infectious. OH MY GOD is an innovative electro-pop-rock trio that includes vocalist Billy O'Neill, organist Iguana, and drummer Patrick Marshall. In a unique departure from most rock combos, the liberal use of Iguana's organ provides hooky, ambient sounds as well as the driving baselines. His history as a blues organist for the likes of Junior Wells, Jeff Healy and other blues heavies shows through here, though in the pop-rock vein. Vocalist O'Neill, also a performance artist and actor, works his voice like a racehorse throughout and even dabbles in a rap and Prince-inflected R&B style.

HAYDEN

8:30PM $10

Combining elements of both rock and folk music, along with disturbingly personal sentiments and a voice that is able to channel both the falsetto highs of Neil Young and the wavering raspy low tones of Leonard Cohen, Toronto's HAYDEN (aka Hayden Desser) has spent most of the last decade creating uniquely affecting music. The critically acclaimed yet criminally ignored musician first appeared in the early '90s armed with only a four-track tape recorder like his heroes in Sebadoh and Pavement. Coupling his unnaturally low range with an extremely detuned guitar, HAYDEN's music is hauntingly beautiful and horrifying all at once. His insights into the humanly mundane as well as more troubling tales retain an oddly personal edge. A few lucky breaks, including a U.S. tour with Guided by Voices and some MTV airplay, brought him a bit further into the spotlight and generated enough interest for the disc to be picked up later by the Geffen offshoot Outpost Recordings. Over the next few years, Hayden remained remarkably productive, issuing a slew of indie singles and EPs that have since become out of print collectors' items. He was also featured on the soundtrack to the 1996 Steve Buscemi-directed film Trees Lounge, for which he provided the moody but decidedly rocking title-track. Although receiving modest airplay, and touring stints with Juliana Hatfield and the Tragically Hip, HAYDEN's critical applause and adoration from his disarmingly loyal fans increased, major commercial success was never in the cards. Within the next year, Outpost was dissolved and HAYDEN was dropped from the Geffen imprint altogether. Over the next few years, the Toronto-based singer disappeared from the public eye altogether and was rarely seen outside of his hometown. An absence of any new material continued for this period of time, but despite his reclusive status, a growing Internet fan base kept hope alive and waited patiently to hear anything at all. A few mysterious rumblings began in early 2001, and by the middle of the year it was announced that he was at work in his home studio on some type of new recording. Despite his long absence, the shows were a series of well-received and mostly sold out affairs, and the second pressing of the disc disappeared almost as quickly as the first. With such positive feedback and open arms welcoming him back to the music scene, HAYDEN was finally persuaded to release the record to a wide audience through the now Universal-distributed Hardwood Records in October of 2001. The 11-track disc is a step back toward the quieter early material, albeit with a newfound sense of playful happiness and a greater reliance on the higher range vocals that were avoided earlier in his career. Hayden has come and gone, but the endearing nature of his material won't allow him to completely disappear, and neither, it seems, will his fans.

THE BOTTLE ROCKETS

THE EVOKA PROJECT

10PM $10

The simple fact is that THE BOTTLE ROCKETS have been making some of the most incisive, hip and eclectic American music on the scene for the better part of a decade now. A sturdy intelligence and weary wisdom fills their songwriting. Throughout the unmatched repertoire of their five albums (including the indispensable seminal roots-rock masterwork The Brooklyn Side), the band's message -- channeled through Brian Henneman's heart wrench of a rasp, Tom Parr's straightforward guitar work, and the unshakable rhythm section of Mark Ortmann on drums and Robert Kearns on bass - has been to know the quality of loss. It is a poignant kind of knowledge, achieved through keen observation and on-the-ground living, an empiricism which (they firmly and eloquently assert) should never be associated with being a loser.

Winston-Salem, NC's EVOKA PROJECT IS moody and melodic and most recently featured on ESPN.

SONGS:OHIA

DAME FATE

THE EARLY DAY MINERS

THE SCOOTERS

9PM $8

SONGS:OHIA is one man, Jason Molina, a tenor guitar-wielding songwriter from the shores of Lake Erie. People often say SONGS:OHIA is to Molina as PALACE is to Will Oldham. While sonically the comparison is valid, Molina's ardent, soul-searching lyrics are more aptly compared to Neil Young or Leonard Cohen. But ultimately, Molina's falsetto is so idiosyncratic, and the economy placed on his guitar playing is so stringent, that full comparisons are difficult to support. Molina was born in Lorain, Ohio. Growing up on a heavy dosage of Black Sabbath, Molina began his musical career playing bass in heavy metal bands around Cleveland. Always a songwriter, Molina eventually decided to perform and record solo with help as needed. He developed a method of tuning his guitar that complemented his voice and worked with his background as a bass player.

FINCH

MOTH

THE STEP KINGS

GHOTI HOOK

9PM $10

Have you heard the one about the Drive-Thru band that started off in high school sounding suspiciously like one of its major influences before finding its own sound and catching the ear of the eminent label? Sure you have, only the story didn't go quite the way this one does. FINCH didn't start off by aping the sounds of Blink 182, or Jimmy Eat World, or any of the other usual suspects. In fact, that was the furthest thing from their minds. "We were pretty much a Deftones ripoff band," singer Nate admits sheepishly. In those days, the Temecula, California based band was called Numb, but it was essentially the same band. That is, until Randy came along. Recruited as a second guitarist to bolster the band's sound, he wound up doing much more than just that. "He introduced us to things like Jimmy Eat World and emo-ish stuff, too. Everyone started listening to it and getting our own ideas. It's been a little over a year and a half since we started working together, and the music has changed so much since then" says Nate, the band's lead singer. It's not that Randy became the architect of a new sound for the band, but the clash of his punk and emo influences with their heavier ones brought the band collectively to something that wasn't exactly any of those things. "We're waiting for someone to throw us into a category, because we don't really know what genre we are, either," says Nate.

MOTH, a modern rock quartet that mixes indie rock sensibility with clever pop hooks, started out as a garage band in the late '80s. Teenage pals Brad Stenz and Bob Gayol tinkered with punk stylings in their native Cincinnati, OH, but opted for something more chic and fresh come their early adult years. Stenz (guitar) and Gayol (guitar) moved to New York and hooked up with the Replacements' Tommy Stinson and drummer Josh Freese. The relaxed environment allowed the foursome to experiment in the studio; however, Stenz wanted something more permanent. Rocket From the Crypt's Atom Willard (drums) and Hedwig and the Angry Inch's Ted Liscinski (bass) stepped in and a deal with Virgin surfaced in spring 2001.

New York City alternative metal band the STEP KINGS was formed in February of 1997 by singer/bassist Bob McLynn, guitarist Fern, and drummer Mike Watt.

Opening the show are rock hard DC act GHOTI HOOK.

NEIL HALSTEAD

SID HILLMAN

7PM
$10 Advance
$12 Day of Show

Since releasing some of the finest shoegazer singles and albums in the early '90s with his band Slowdive, NEIL HALSTEAD has slowly become one of Britain's most respected songwriters. While Slowdive had more to do with sounds that songs, the transition that band made into Mojave 3 in the mid-'90s allowed Halstead to further emulate the largely late '60s-based folk-rock songwriters with whom he had become enamored. Along the way, Halstead has done something of a tightrope act by earning comparisons to those figures without being accused of mere mimicry or tiresome revivalism. At some point shortly after the release of Mojave 3's third album, 2000's Excuses for Travellers, Halstead found himself without normal living quarters (the result of a breakup) and he opted to hang his hat at a studio for a couple months. With several orphaned Mojave 3 songs kicking around, Halstead took advantage of his situation and record them alone for a possible solo record. He left the studio after finding an actual place of residence and periodically ducked back into the studio with a couple friends -- including Mojave 3's Ian McCutcheon, longtime associate Mark Van Hoen (Locust), and Coley Park's Nick Holton -- over the following year to finish things off. 2002's Sleeping on Roads was the result, which traded the oft-cited American touchstones (Bob Dylan, Neil Young) of Mojave 3 for English touchstones (Bert Jansch, Nick Drake). By the time 4AD released the record, Halstead already had designs for a second solo record and Mojave 3 were in the process of making their fourth LP.

Opening is LA's SID HILLMAN.

DOUBLESPEAK

HOWLIN MAGGIE

Z WHEELER

MISCELLANEOUS FLUX

10PM $7

Doublespeak is known for tight, complex arrangements, superior musicianship (guitarist Chepucavage was a NJ All-State Jazz ensemble emember) and the sultry, sexy vocals of its female lead singer, Pamela O'Sullivan. A melodic, jazzy sound that's easy on the ears, but which never strays too far from red, white, and blue-blooded rock n'roll, Doublespeak prides itself on its jazz/funk-infused rock originality. The group is just weeks away from releasing its first full-length album, recorded this winter at Cue Studios in Falls Church, VA. Catch an act at the beginning of its musical career that is sure to make a name for itself in the Northeast in the coming year.

HOWLIN' MAGGIE debuted with their first album on Columbia records in 1996. Since then they have had a song in the movie "Beautiful Girls" entitled , "Easy to be Stupid" and The Real World Hawaii used their song "Alcohol." The new line up is an amazingly talented group consisting of drummer Carlton Smith, who you may remember from the Royal Crescent Mob (along with Happy) and 24-7 Spyz. Lance Ellison is the new guitarist and Christian Hurd kills on the bass. All from Columbus, OH, this foursome all sing and are multiple instrumentalists- making for amazing chemistry in the studio. The new songs have been recorded and mixed in Happy's studio and the group has been playing out quite abit lately. The live show has been called "incredible," "wild",and a "major" party!"

Z. WHEELER first hit the New York City music scene in April 1999, with a debut gig at The Spiral Lounge on Houston Street. Since that opening night, the New York-based band has regularly played the city's club circuit, honing its hooks, developing its rhythms and, along the way, attracting an enthusiastic and loyal fan base.

AMANDA GARRIGUES

8PM $7

AMANDA GARRIGUES was born in the southern, college town of Gainesville, Florida. In the music that she writes and performs, she pays tribute to the themes of home, family and independence. From the time she was a young girl, Amanda absorbed her love of music through her father, an accomplished guitarist who played campfire songs to her while she sang along. Her family attended church every Sunday, where the traditional hymns of the church choir she sang in, further inspired her to want to create and perform her own music. While a student at the University of Florida, she met and played with other musicians, and formed the progressive folk band, Big Shoals Tract. In her two years as singer/frontwoman for Big Shoals Tract, Amanda established herself as one of the most popular and endearing women in the Gainesville music scene. During her time in Big Shoals Tract, Amanda met Lynda Stipe and her band, the eclectic Athens, Georgia-based, Hetch-Hetchy, whom she briefly toured with as a back-up singer. When BST disbanded, she decided it was time to focus more on her own songwriting and guitar playing. Amanda's debut CD Spirit Act was released in the Fall of 1998 and her second cd, Groundswell, followed in 2000. Since that time, she has toured the South and Northeast consistently, sharing the stage with such artists like Jonatha Brooke, Michelle Malone, Iris Dement and Ferron. Amanda's credits include receiving an honorable mention for the Indie Band Search 2001 and being a semi-finalist in the E.A.R.S. Talent Showcase in NYC this past March. She has also been invited to showcase as Nashville's NEA Extravaganza, the Atlantis Music Conference, NEMO, Cutting Edge of the Campfire in Boston and the Rockrgrl Music Conference in Seattle. In her spare time, Amanda writes an article for Womanrock.com Amanda is one of those rare artists who can speak to you in a voice that gives both compassion and registers pain. Whether you are listening to Amanda from the comfort of your couch or from the back of a smoke-filled club, you know immediately that you are the recipient of a gift.
