THE DRUMMSTICK

VAUGHAN PENN

MODEST PROPOSAL

9PM $7

THE DRUMMSTICK is a group AND it is percussion controller invented by Dr. E. Smith in 1995. A variety of musical and digital sounds come together in the instrument with World sounds to formulate a kind of banjo-meets-Bruford tribal groove along with atmospheric sonic landscapes. The intrepidensemble's acid jazz explorations wander into every world musical nook and cranny, making this collection a trip well worth taking.

VAUGHAN PENN has been performing since the age of two. She grew up in the small town of Madison, North Carolina where by the age of fourteen she was writing songs, fronting bands, and playing coffeehouses. In addition to sharing the stage with such acts as Edwin McCain, Cracker, Michael McDonald, Emmy Lou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Sister Hazel, and Angie Aparo, in the US and Europe, she has had songs featured on NBC's "Providence," "Cold Feet" amd even an end title song on the DVD version of "Star Wars." Stevie Nicks recorded a version of one of her songs for a feature film in Hollywood.

MARY PRANKSTER

PATTI ROTHBERG

8PM

$8 advance
$10 day of show

Playing an impassioned but playful brand of straight-up Rock & Roll, Baltimore's MARY PRANKSTER (named for singer Mary Prankster) performs an eclectic brand of R&R, flirting with bluesy structures and bouncy Indie Rock. There's also an endearing sense of humor evident, especially on the '20s flavored snippet "Punk Rock Heaven" and snotty "Mata Hari." The group has garnered an impressive amount of favorable press, even landing on the cover of a couple of East Coast music publications. Live, Mary Prankster is bound to be an entertaining night out that'll have you leaving with a big ol' smile on your face.

New York City born and bred singer/songwriter PATTI ROTHBERG got a lot of attention for her 1996 major label debut, Between the 1 and 9 (EMI Records USA). The honesty and truthfulness of the lyrics and music struck critics and fans alike. A multi-instrumentalist, ROTHBERG played all the bass and guitar parts on Between the 1 and 9 and began playing piano when she was three years old. This developed into composing and songwriting by the time she turned 15. Though ROTHBERG attended the Parsons School of Design as an illustration major, she continued to play music for fun, busking in lower Manhattan's subways. Eventually, she hooked up with a manager and shopped her demo tape to different labels, signing to EMI. Paradoxically, the personal, intimate performances on Between the 1 and 9- a reference to the to the subway where she got started -- propelled it to a wide audience. The album's mix of blues, folk-rock and alternative rock not only paid homage to ROTHBERG's early influences like the Allman Brothers and Janis Joplin, it also found favor with adult rock radio programmers. With a successful debut and opening gigs for the likes of Paul Westerberg, the Wallflowers and Garbage, her momentum seemed unstoppable until EMI's US branch closed its doors, leaving her without a label. For a number of years she continued to play and write, and when she met producer Freddie Katz, Rotherberg was finally ready and able to record her follow-up Candelabra Cadabra.

DECIFUNK

PAPER DOLL

KISS KISS BANG BANG

KATHY CASHEL
(CRY BABY CRY)

8PM $7

DECIFUNK made its first appearance on Halloween night of 1999. Decked out in crazy costumes, the band was a sight to see and hard not to dance to. Male and female vocalists, two guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone, and trombone, provided some of the best live dance music around. This powerhouse lineup performs a two hour set of seventies soul and funk tunes that blows a crowd away. DECIFUNK has performed at top East Coast venues in the Northeast and have shared the stage with such acts as the Addison Groove Project, The Jeff Coffin Band (Master saxophonist from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), Conehead Buddah, Uncle Sammy, and Fox Trot Zulu.

PAPER DOLL is an indie rock band from the Northern VA/DC area. Songs are personal, social and political with both female and male vocals. Influences include Sleater-Kinney and Hole.

Seminal indie acts KISS KISS BANG and KATHY CASHEL from CRY BABY CRY open the show.

ABI TAPIA

NADIA GOELLNER

NATALIE ZUKERMAN

8PM $8

With her guitar and CDs in tow, ABI TAPIA has been taking to stages all over the US and steadily building a dedicated base of listeners. The daughter of musicians, she was born in Alabama and lived until she was fifteen in various towns around the South. She has since lived in the Midwest (where she attended Grinnell College as a Sociology major) and currently resides in Maine. As a way to reconnect with her Southern roots, she started exploring country music and found new inspiration for her songwriting. Abi's songs are simple yet hauntingly complex in their delivery.

BONEPONY

10PM $8

BONEPONY was formed by singer/songwriter Scott Johnson and guitarist Bryan Ward in Baltimore in 1989. The duo moved to Nashville in 1991, where they hooked up with Kenny Mims, a producer, who became a band member. In 1994, they signed to Capitol Records, which released their debut album Stomp Revival in 1995. Mims then left the band and was replaced by Tramp, who played a variety of stringed instruments. In 1997, Capitol rejected the group's proposed second album and dropped them from the label. The band has released albums on their own and has continued to thrill audiences everywhere on a vigorous touring schedule.
Thu 11

JASON LEWIS (STAR CITY)

9PM $7

JASON LEWIS leader and founder of NYC- based STAR CITY was singing solos in the church choir in his native West Virginia by age five, and went on to lead experimental indie rock bands while majoring in music and then creative writing at West Virginia University. With a songwriting career begun, and a unique "Pavarotti-of-Punk" voice in place, Jason moved to New York in '93, pursuing both the rock and roll dream and the girl who'd become his wife. While writing and performing within the East Village "anti-folk" scene that also spawned Beck, he met the musicians who'd partner with him in the earliest version of STAR CITY the following year.

ULTRA BAIT

GIRL HARBOR

DADDY

10PM $7

Spewing from the chaos and beauty of urban decay, ULTRA BAIT hails from the capital of the South -Richmond, Virginia. ULTRA BAIT with three buxom fillies and two strapping bucks lay down two minute rockers while flitting hearts with a sultry glam punk stage show. Unforgettable to all - ULTRA BAIT brings back a high energy rock show to the national scene. ULTRA BAIT formed in 1997 when bassist Tammie True met singer Angie and decided over gin & tonics to rock the world. Combined with the sultry allure and rough baritone of singer Angie, the mesmerizingly desultory bass sounds of Tammie True, the flying fingers and hottest solo's of Jon luc Penar, the coolest licks from Brook the hook, and backbone rhythms of drummer Big Dog…ROCK enters a new dimension of KICK ASS!

Legend has it that two of the four members of GIRL HARBOR funded their move to the underground music mecca of New York City by offering themselves up as paid human guinea pigs for science. Fact or fiction, that supposed dramatic act speaks loudly of the band's spirit. GIRL HARBOR isn't going to woo you with sweet, wistful tunes that will get your tear ducts working overtime (don't let their sensitive, British band look fool you). What they will do is overwhelm you with drama by way of a rowdy, if not belligerent, mix of straightforward '70s-inspired garage rock and head-nodding pop. On the occasion that they attempt a pseudo-ballad (as on "Sleeping To Drink"), it's not of the aforementioned weepy variety; it's more along the lines of what would happen if Jane's Addiction released "Been Caught Stealing" in slowed-down form. You'd think that the vocals supplied by Jimmy Spoiler might include lyrics at least partially romantic, but then he lets out his Robert Plant-esque wail and it seems more like a tune to rock out to than one by which to contemplate your current relationship. Imagine an all male version of The Donnas, and you've got a good definition of GIRL HARBOR's sound -- loud, irreverent and unmistakably good old rock 'n' roll.

DADDY is a mesmerizing, out of body experience. Lead singer Laurel (Daddy) is a gorgeous front woman and stage presence with non-stop dancing and elegant, sexy, otherworldly costumes. The heavy tribal drums, pop-ethereal guitar, and sledgehammer bass inspire Daddy's audiences to dance and scream. Laurel's vocals range from diva to the demonic, operatic nun to biblical harlot. In the quiet moments the guitars sounds like a cello or a violin underneath a primordial sea-music of peace. At the crushing live shows, dancing fans scream "I LOVE YOU DADDY!"

Sat 13

BLUE DOGS

HOMUNCULUS

10PM $10

After years of doing all that it takes to develop a large fan base, including grass-roots promotion, touring, and releasing two albums, the Charleston SC-based BLUE DOGS are in full stride with their Americana-tinged contemporary rock. Primary songwriter Bobby Houck has found that the key to successful writing is writing what he knows. Throughout college and beyond, Houck's music has been an alloy of sounds from the southern landscape resulting in music that is at once folk, roots, blues and bluegrass that appeals to adventurous rock fans. The influence of artists such as Little Feat, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty is immediately apparent yet serve as suggestions rather than blueprints for the Blue Dogs' style.

The Cincinnati boys return to the Metro Café with what the Cincinnati Post calls a "quirky outfit [who] manages to merge swing, rock, rap, and funk elements into its own inventive sound that showcases some great harmonies and witty songwriting." If you're a fan of the Talking Heads' Remain in Light, Steely Dan, or the Meters, you'll certainly take to Homunculus' like-minded but-more-contemporary brand of engulfing, textural Pop.

Sun 14

AMY SPEACE

ANNIE LIN

KAREN JACOBSEN

10PM $7

New York City folk-rock artist AMY SPEACE moves from gutsy to vulnerable in one breath. This country girl from Pennsylvania taught herself guitar and started formulating songs in her early 20s. The Amherst College grad drew upon the Ernest Tubbs and Johnny Cash songs she was raised on to create a blend of urban and country, incorporating pop hooks into a rootsy medium. Her enthralling voice and its delicate timbre resonates throughout all of her songs and performances, whether playing solo acoustic or supported by her band-- John Abbey on bass, Jagoda on drums and James Mastro on guitar.

Percussive guitarwork, literate songwriting and off-kilter charm set ANNIE LIN apart from other acoustic singer-songwriters. Annie has been touring nationally for the past two years and has won over an enthusiastic following on the East and West coasts and in Texas. Often compared to such artists as Lisa Loeb, Victoria Williams and Ani DiFranco, she brings pop sensibility and rock n' roll ferocity to the rareified genre of folk. Drumming and strumming go hand-in-hand for Annie-she approaches the role of rhythm guitarist with uncommon ferocity. Her ability to, as one reviewer put it, "strum the hell out of that thing," often surprises audiences who don't know what to expect from a 5'4, guitar-toting Asian-American in heels. Onstage, she's an offbeat storyteller and an energetic performer who would stagedive if it were allowed at folk clubs. Influenced by alt-rock, indie folk and the occasional Dave Matthews bootleg, Annie writes songs that might be classified as FM-friendly pop-folk. With honesty and passion, her lyrics record the tiny quirks, joys and tragedies of day-to-day living.

KAREN JACOBSEN was born to touch people's lives with her music, writing songs since she was seven years old. Karen weaves her pop piano and vocal magic by sharing her honest and very personal reflections of life. In May 2000, Karen released her third indie cd, "As I Am". The intimate piano and vocal treatments of her songs on this record have been described as "deeply touching" and "wonderfully real". Originally from Mackay, a country town in the tropics near Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Karen is currently in the studio recording her new pop record.

SWEARING AT MOTORISTS

WESTERN KEYS

THE JUAN PROPHET
ORGANIZATION

10PM $7

Dayton, OH-based lo-fi pop duo Swearing at Motorists teamed singer/guitarist Dave Doughman and Drummer Don Thrasher, the latter a member of local heroes Guided by Voices at their Bee Thousand-era peak. Debuting in 1995 with a self-released, self-titled cassette, Swearing at Motorists returned the following year with an EP, Tuesday's Pretzel Night; the full-length Fear of Low Flying Clouds appeared in 1997, with the band's debut effort for the Secretly Canadian label, More Songs from the Mellow Struggle and Number Seven Uptown both following two years later.

Austin, TX's WESTERN KEYS make the kind of slow-and-tortured-yet-awfully-catchy-and-pretty indie rock that we all love so much. The Keys flesh out the twists and turns with whatever instumentation they need to. Think Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, Japancakes, Matt Pond PA, Kingsbury Manx, etc.

How does one come up with THE JUAN PROPHET ORGANIZATION? They brew up a weird brand of musician in Ruston, La. The Elephant 6 Collective--which includes the amazingly amazing Neutral Milk Hotel, the merely amazing Olivia Tremor Control, and the darn-good-on-a-good-night Apples in Stereo---all came barrelling out of Ruston a few years back with their horns, guitars, and singing saws in tow. Though not quite as eccentric as any of these previously mentioned bands, THE JUAN PROPHET ORGANIZATION could hardly be from anywhere other than Ruston. Whereas Elephant 6 all seem to be influenced by a combination of folk and 60's psychedelia, the JPO are clearly more interested in jazz and r&b...and the Fugs and Sebadoh, and just about everything that Elephant 6 left out of their musical repertoire.

THE STRATFORD FOUR

MAZARIN

10PM $8

San Francisco mod quad THE STRATFORD 4 creates the kind of minor-key, post-psychedelic pop that's ideal both for blurry nights at the bar and for the unfortunate morning after. The ban's music is kind of soothing, even pleasant, but it's got regenerative power. Loose and drone-y atmospheric wanderings coalesce into blistering, urgent feedback sessions, while a lonesome acoustic guitar continues to strum. Surnameless singer Chris' voice is a paragon of hipster disaffection, and is sometimes bolstered by drummer Andrea's soothing vocal strains. With a sound that borrows from bands like the Church, Spiritualized, and perhaps Yo La Tengo at its least esoteric, the Stratford 4 crafts a dense, multilayered groove that hits outer space on every song and still makes it home within five minutes.

Quentin Stoltzfus took a huge risk when he emerged from behind the drum kit of Azusa Plane to sing and play guitar on last year's MAZARIN debut, Watch It Happen. After all, nobody expects a drummer to be adept at writing and performing his or her own songs, but everybody's ready to pounce when the result is, as expected, terrible. But Stoltzfus nearly blew everyone away, displaying a remarkably developed psych-pop sensibility. With A Tell-Tale Storyline, MAZARIN has brought this project out of the bedroom and into the world, catapulting the 27-year-old Philadelphia songwriter up near the top tier of indie artists. Augmenting his fluid, repetitive, New Zealand-type strumming with electric squalls and earnest, confident vocals, Stoltzfus sounds like he's having fun, and it's infectious. In "What Sees The Sky," his singsong delivery, multi-tracked vocal harmonies and giddy chorus of "Better write a song about it" comes off like a musical mantra. Lucky for us, Stoltzfus wants to share it.

GIST

ARLO

RILO KILEY

10PM $8

The Washington D.C based band GIST was formed as a trio in 1995 with childhood friends Nayan Bhula (Guitar/Vocals) and Fred Burton (Drums). The two recruited Jennifer Moentmann (Bass), a college friend of Nayan's to join them. The band went on to gig extensively in the D.C area and record a number of demos and two EPs; 1997's Youth's Avail and 1999's Soundtrack for My Parting Ways. Due to artistic differences the band "parted ways" with Moentmann in early 1999. At a crossroads, GIST reformed itself as a quartet with the addition of Jim Campbell (Bass/Vocals) from central Pennsylvania and Finley Martin (Guitar/Vocals) from Prince Edward Island, Canada. The new lineup mixed diverse influences into its sound including post-punk, classic hard rock and experimental rock. With the help of touring in clubs and all-age events throughout the entire east coast, the Midwest and Canada in the past few years, the band continued to progress both on stage and with their songwriting.

ARLO, the L.A foursome, will turn you on if you like Urge Overkill, the New Pornographers, Queens of the Stone Age or the Who, you will cherish ARLO. Nate Greely and Sean Spillane share lead vocals and guitar throught the record, and the dynamics between the two of them are often nothing short of masterful. Thanks mainly to such decadent melodiousness, the band finds kindred spirits in everyone from Teenage Fanclub to the Pixies and the Smithereens.

Fellow Los Angelinos RILO KILEY succeeds in crafting a homespun style that sidles comfortably from soothing acoustic strains into pop perfection, with no interference in between.

VANITY CHAMP

SOLEDAD BROTHERS

STEERAGE

10PM $7

Arlington, Virginia's own VANITY CHAMP formed a little over five years ago, play passionate hard rock with big hooks and big dynamics. Live, they demand your attention, always locked into the force of their own music blending with the energy of a hungry crowd - a must see!

The dark blues duo SOLEDAD BROTHERS began in early 1998 after guitarist/vocalist Johnny Wirick (a.k.a. Johnny Walker) asked drummer Ben Smith (a.k.a. Ben Swank) if he wanted to play a show. Wirick and Smith's partnership can be traced back to their days in the Toledo, Ohio blues group Henry and June, which existed from 1994 until 1996. After that group broke up, Wirick continued playing with drummer Doug Walker in the two-piece blues outfit Johnny Walker. Before one of the band's shows in early 1998, Walker decided to leave the group. Looking for someone to fill in for the gig, Wirick turned to Smith, who agreed to play. Developing from what was supposed to be a one-off show, Wirick and Smith decided to continue as the Soledad Brothers. Based in suburban Toledo, Ohio, SOLEDAD BROTHERS had Jack White, a member of the Detroit band White Stripes, produced a 7". White had known the Soledad Brothers since their first gig and was a labelmate of the group during their time with Italy Records (the band is signed to Estrus). White also assisted the band for two years recording their self-titled debut. It was during those two years that the group opened a show at Cleveland, Ohio's Pat's, located in the famous Flats, for legendary MC5 manager John Sinclair. He enjoyed the Soledad Brothers so much that he invited them to be the backing group for his part of the performance. This led to a friendship with Sinclair that resulted in him writing the liner notes for the band's 2000 debut album.

Opening are DC's newest star STEERAGE.

Rock 'n' roll is alive and well under the Name Gadget White Band. Gadget (derived from the name Gidget), leads the group with pulsating, soul drenched vocals. GALLOWAY

10PM $7

GALLOWAY is the setting for Jack Kerouac's first novel The Town and the City. It is a town representative of anywhere, full of people who are representative of everyone. In telling it's story, he tells the story of us all. It is the backdrop for the start of the Dulouz legend and the background upon which GALLOWAY will experiment with sounds to create music unique unto itself. Founding members, Brian Grabbatin (formerly of Two Percent) and Jacob Smith (formerly of DCG), started the group as a duo in August 2000. After successful performances at Millennium Music and The Warehouse, they decided to add The Atom 7117 (formerly of The Power Star) and Art Lemaster. Noel Wurst (active artist) was also added to complete their vision for .Galloway... Noel Wurst graduated in may 2001 and decided he was leaving summer 2001 to start his professional career. So another visual artist Brian Sneed joined the group to add more visual stimulation. Art Lemaster also decided to leave the band so Alex Ross replaced him brilliantly on drums. The quintet displays work by various local visual artists at their performances. With painting, drawing, ironing, video, singing, talking, humming, whistling, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, trap set, conga, didgeridoo, xylophone, harmonicas, sitar, and various other instruments, the band achieves their unique sound. It could be described as a soulful, experimental, truthful, rock experience, but even then it would be an understatement.
