"Return To Belaye: A Rite of Passage"
A documentary by Amy Flannery

In "Return to Belaye: A Rite of Passage" DC filmmaker Amy Flannery accompanies her Senegalese husband Papis Goudiaby when he returns to his West African village in the summer of 1999 to take part in an initiation-into-manhood ceremony. Goudiaby is a member of the Jola tribe. He joins other young men from the village of Belaye for the secret ritual that young Jola men must go through before they can marry and assume a more extensive role in their community. The Belaye initiates spend two suspenseful weeks in the Sacred Forest where they learn the secrets of the Jola tribe and responsibilities of manhood. This documentary offers a window into the positive side of African life where stable, peaceful communities provide a meaningful existence for their residents. The film also shows two human beings from two vastly different cultures coming together in love.

80 mins.

Filmmaker Amy Flannery and her husband, the subject of the documentary, Papis Goudiaby will attend the screening.

Amy Flannery won the DC Documentary Filmmaker Award from the DC Independent Film Festival for "Return to Belaye"
